The museum-estate of Nikolay Ivanovych Pirogov (prominent scientist and surgeon, creator of field surgery, he was one of the first surgeons in Europe to use ether as an anaesthetic) is one of the most interesting places of our city. The museum-estate is situated in the south-western part of our city. Nikolay Pirogov was not only a doctor, he wrote the research papers, which ensured his success and might his memory live forever in the field of medicine. During the last years of his life, a prominent doctor and scientist had been writing the memoirs “The Old Physician's Diary”. For the fourth time he received the Demidov Prize by Russian Academy of Sciences. A long period of his life he spent in Ukraine. In 1861 he sent in his papers, he was the administrator of the educational district in Kiev and he moved to his estate in Vishnya, where he lived twenty years. A prominent scientist, having a rest from the responsible posts, didn’t stop scientific study, practical and public activities. He opened the first hospital and the chemist's in the village. The chemist's became very popular among the local poor peasants because they could obtain the medicaments gratuitously.
He died of cancer in his estate on November 23, 1881. The body of a prominent scientist was embalmed by the doctor Vivodtsev, specially invited to do it from Sankt-Peterburg. The embalmed body was moved to the burial vault, built by his wife. Three years later, the family chapel was built above the burial vault.
During the Second World War the embalmed body of Pirogov was evacuated from the burial vault. After the liberation of Vinnytsia from German-fascist armed forces, the embalmed body of a prominent scientist was returned to its place. The government took a historical decision on October 27, 1944 to found the museum in his estate in the village of Vishnya, where his embalmed body is visible in public. The museum-estate of Nikolay Ivanovych Pirogov was opened on September 9, 1947 as a solemn occasion.
