Palm Sunday in Ukraine

The date of this holiday varies according to the church calendar. The feast is established in memory of the entrance of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. According to the story, from this event began the suffering of Christ. This event is displayed in the Gospel of Mark, Luke, Matthew, and John.

The entrance of Jesus was solemn, equal to the entrance of the king to Jerusalem. According to ancient tradition, kings and winners of different battles entered the city on a horse or donkey. At the gates of the city, they were met by crowds of people with palm branches in their hands and solemn cries, glorifying the driver.

Christ entered the city in a different role, he was not a winner and was not a king. He drove like a man who conquered evil, death, and earthly sins.

In Ukraine, this day is usually called Palm Sunday . The branches of the willow in case symbolize the palm branches with which the people met Jesus. In the church, believers rush with the blossoming branching branches.

This holiday precedes the most important Christian holiday Easter and is celebrated exactly one week before it. However, in spite of the fact that Palm Sunday takes place during the Great Lent, a slight indulgence is allowed. Believers can taste fish dishes this evening and even drink wine.
