Kupala Night in Ukraine

Ivan Kupala or Kupala Night, Ivanov's day is one of the brightest holidays of the calendar of the Slavs. Our ancestors celebrated this holiday long before the Baptism of Rus and its roots go away at the time of paganism when our ancestors sacredly believed in the mighty forces of nature.

According to pagan traditions, this day was celebrated also as the day of the Sun. Young people made male and female stuffed animals Kupalo and Marena and all the activities were concentrated around these stuffed animals. Scarecrow Bathing did the guys, and Marena the girls, then they dressed in clothes (male and female respectively). At the end of the evening, a stuffed drowned in a river or burned.
