Kupala Night in Ukraine
Ivan Kupala or Kupala Night, Ivanov's day is one of the brightest holidays of the calendar of the Slavs. Our ancestors celebrated this holiday long before the Baptism of Rus and its roots go away at the time of paganism when our ancestors sacredly believed in the mighty forces of nature.
Numerous bathing ceremonies that take place on the eve of the holiday are a complex of rituals, which consists of several stages, among them picking flowers and herbs, decorating houses with greenery, lighting a fire, jumping over a fire, dousing with water, and of course, divination. There is a belief that the Kupala night was the most accurate fortune-telling. The girls weave wreaths of grass, flowers, and plants, and then let them go to the water and looked out for the display of their betrothed.
The tradition of jumping over a fire also has a symbolic character you can jump over a fire like a couple, holding hands, and alone. If during the jump the couple can hold on and not let go of each other's hands, then they will certainly be together and soon they will have a wedding, if they did not succeed, then it is not destined to build a joint future for them. A lucky jump also brings health, and if a man was kicked into a fire during a jump, it promised him failures for the whole year. According to pagan traditions, this day was celebrated also as the day of the Sun. Young people made male and female stuffed animals Kupalo and Marena and all the activities were concentrated around these stuffed animals. Scarecrow Bathing did the guys, and Marena the girls, then they dressed in clothes (male and female respectively). At the end of the evening, a stuffed drowned in a river or burned. On the Kupala night in Ukraine, many daredevils go to the forest. According to popular beliefs this night a fern blooms. Find the flower of the fern waiting for the treasure. However, it is worth remembering that on the way to the flower you can be prevented by the unclean force, and the treasures found can spoil the soul. Our ancestors believed that the dew on this day has healing properties, and at dawn, those wishing to be healthy hastened to walk barefoot in the dew.
