The First Savior (Maccabeus) in Ukraine

The Honey Savior (Maccabeus) is celebrated on August 14. The symbol of this day is poppy. In the churches on the day of the Honey Savior, remember Solomiya and her seven sons-Makoveev, who died for their faith. In addition, this day is twice more festive for the church, since in 988 Prince Vladimir accepted Christianity.

Residents of Ukraine before the holiday are preparing special bouquets of "Maccabeus’s" flowers. As a rule, the bouquet consists of poppy heads, mint calendula, and thyme. Each plant has its own symbolic meaning and certain magical properties. With these bouquets, people go to the church service and consecrate flowers, as well as poppy pies, etc.

In the people, the Feast of the Honey Savior has several names - First Savior, Honey Savior, Maccabeus, Savior on the water. On this day, it is customary to consecrate water sources near houses. The ritual of consecration of wells and springs is accompanied by cheerful chanting and dancing. From this day begins the Assumption Post, the duration of which is 2 weeks. By strict compliance with the fast, it is equated with the Great Post.

The traditional dishes of Maccabeus are certainly associated with poppy seeds. Ukrainian housewives bake honey and poppy cakes and various pastries with the content of these ingredients.
